Joyce Moseley - chief executive of Rainer |
Joyce Moseley has been Rainer's chief executive since October 1999.
She was formerly the Director of Social Services for the London Borough of Hackney and was Vice-President of the ADSS. As a member of the Youth Justice Board from its inception, she led on workforce strategies and the need for non-government work on prevention.
She is a trustee of "The Who Cares? Trust" which promotes the needs of children in public care and was awarded an OBE in 2006.
Here Joyce reflects on what life is like today for our service users.
"What's it like to be a teenager today? It's never plain sailing, that's for sure. A time of adventure and self-discovery for the confident ones with friends, family and an education; but for those less confident, a period of risk and uncertainty. The journey from childhood to young adulthood isn't easy for anyone. And those without the support of family and friends find it hardest of all.
Rainer works with thousands of under-supported young people every year who are living at the margins of society. They may be in or leaving care or custody, involved in or on the fringes of crime, out of work, struggling at school, homeless or facing young parenthood without the safety net of a supportive family.
They lack self esteem, they may have physical or mental health problems and they're disillusioned. They desperately want to "make good" but they don't know how.
We give these young people the skills, resources and support they need to change their behaviour and get past the obstacles in their way. It's easy enough to say but it requires every ounce of our collective will and experience, and joint working with others, to put into practice. There is no quick fix solution. Proper housing, support and education are key.
Rainer has been at the forefront of supporting young people and young adults for the past two centuries and has a rich and diverse history as the organisation that gave birth to the probation service and the reform school movement.
Last year marked the 200th anniversary of the Act of Parliament which established Rainer. We celebrated this with a series of events to raise awareness of the issues faced by under-supported young people and young adults.
I am proud of all that Rainer has achieved over the years and now looking forwards, we will continue to help as many young people as we can make a successful journey to adulthood.
I hope you will join us in our work.
Joyce Moseley
