Rainer awarded mark of excellence for volunteer management

4 June 2008

Youth charity Rainer's commitment to high quality volunteer involvement was recognised today when it was awarded Volunteering England's Investing in Volunteers quality kite mark - the UK standard for volunteering management.

To achieve the standard, the charity underwent a rigorous assessment, which began with a self-assessment to identify areas for improvement and concluded with site visits by assessors from Volunteering England and interviews with Rainer staff, board members and volunteers.  The full process took more than 9 months.

Rainer Volunteer Development Manager Emma Capon said:
"Volunteers have been crucial to the Rainer's work with young people since the day the charity was founded more than 200 years ago.  We couldn't do what we do without them and so it is vital that we provide them with highest quality of management and support possible.

"The Investing in Volunteers framework has given us a clear and objective assessment of what we are doing well and where we can do better, and then has laid out what we can do to improve.   The process has been invaluable."

Rainer has more than 380 volunteers nationwide, primarily working as mentors for disadvantaged young people or as Appropriate Adults, who attend the police station to support young people under the age of 18 whose parents or carers are unable to be with them.  The charity has also recently launched a youth volunteering initiative in Essex, which gives young people aged between 16 and 24 the opportunity to engage in projects that improve their local neighbourhoods.
